Exploring VWBPE for the March 31 Nonprofit Commons Meeting

Join us this Friday, March 31st for the NonProfit Commons in Second Life meeting, where we will explore the Virtual Worlds Best Practices in Education (VWBPE) conference taking place this week. We will visit the virtual exhibits of some of our community members, and afterward, those wanting to attend the rest of the conference can continue on to the VWBPE 10 AM presentations.

Supporting Brain Injury for the March 17 Nonprofit Commons Meeting

Join us this Friday, March 17th for the Nonprofit Commons in Second Life meeting featuring Gloria Kraegel (Namaara MacMoragh in SL) presenting on how Brain Injury affects individuals, families, and workplaces. This presentation will address some low cost and useful ideas for employers and individuals with cognitive challenges to work together and create an accommodating and productive workplace.

Gloria's current project with the Brain Energy Support Team (BEST) gives her an even greater opportunity to blend real life situations with Second Life experiences that raise awareness, model healthy living skills, and provide educational opportunities for individuals, professionals, classrooms, and businesses within, and outside of, the brain injury community. Legacy: 2017 VWBPE Conference for March 10th Nonprofit Commons Meeting

Join us this Friday, March 10th for our weekly Nonprofit Commons in Second Life meeting, featuring Kevin Feenan (Phelan Corrimal in Second Life), President of Rockcliffe University Consortium and Executive Director of the 10th annual Virtual Worlds Best Practices in Education (VWBPE) conference. this year's conference theme is 'Legacy', is taking place March 29 – April 1, 2017, and Kevin will cover everything that is happening. VWBPE is a peer-reviewed community event focusing on education in immersive virtual environments and showcasing the community, creativity, and learning that takes place in this community of practice.

Etopia EcoCommunity for the February 17th Nonprofit Commons Meeting

Join us this Friday, February 17th for the first Nonprofit Commons in Second Life meeting will feature a presentation from Gloria Kraegel (Namaara MacMoragh in SL) with an update on the Etopia EcoCommunity and other projects.  

Namaara MacMoragh, aka Gloria Kraegel, has 30+ years independent consulting experience focusing on helping nonprofits and cooperatives develop capacity through training, information management, and organizational systems development. She is also the creative force behind Etopia EcoCommunity in Second Life. Established in 2007, Etopia is designed to showcase real-world ideas for living sustainably in social, community, business, and environmental contexts.

Effective Survey Design for the January 27th Nonprofit Commons Meeting

This Friday, January 27th, TechSoup's NonProfit Commons in Second Life will feature Yen Verhoeven (TheoreticallyBlue in Second Life) presenting a brief introduction to survey design and how it may be used to inform programmatic evaluation, research, and marketing strategies. We will go over the survey design process, and talk about best practices as well as things to avoid when writing a survey. Yen will also discuss different ways to pilot and disseminate surveys, increase survey participation, as well as suggest survey and analytical software to address different needs. At the end of the presentation, she will be asking presentation attendants to pilot a survey instrument that she intends to use for her thesis study at the Builder's Brewery in Second Life.
 
Yen Verhoeven is a Ph.D. candidate in the Warner Graduate School of Education at the University of Rochester, and the program evaluator for the COMETS Scholarship program at the Rochester Institute of Technology. She has 11+ years of teaching experience in Biotechnology and served as the Biotechnology and Pharmacy Technology Department Chair at Fortis College. She managed the Students Tackling Relevant and Authentic Science (STARS) after school program through the University of Rochester, and co-founded the BioTech SYSTEM Northern California consortium through the University of California at Davis. Yen is also a curriculum and program evaluation consultant, and her services are available for those interested in program evaluation and qualitative research design.
