Whole Brain Health for the August 5th Nonprofit Commons Meeting

Whole Brain Health logoThis Friday, August 5th, TechSoup's NonProfit Commons in Second Life will feature Lynne Berrett (Wisdomseeker Lissena in SL) and Szavanna (Sunshine) who will introduce you to the Inspiration Island community and discuss some of the “brain training” activities offered through the Whole Brain Health Group. Grown out of her commitment to making open source and creative resources to everyone, Szavanna will also share info on the Sunvibes Workshops, and the impressive collection gathered of free resources and full perm materials which can be used in Second Life and Open Simulator.

Exploring Microsoft HoloLens for Training & Learning for July 29th Nonprofit Commons Meeting

This Friday, July 29th, TechSoup's NonProfit Commons in Second Life will feature Kyle Gomboy presenting on how smart holograms for training, education, business and entertainment will change the way we perceive our digital information. Holograms that are driven by human action, computer vision, computer learning and big data are the focus of developing for tools like Microsoft’s HoloLens

 

Kyle "G" Gomboy, a former aerospace test engineer and virtual and mixed reality world developer for 15+ years, now leads a new startup "Wavelength" to explore the commercial and educational uses of devices like Microsoft's HoloLens headset.

Transitioning Your Project to OpenSimulator for July 22nd Nonprofit Commons Meeting

This Friday, July 22nd, TechSoup's NonProfit Commons in Second Life  will feature Selby Evans, Thinkerer Melville in SL, who will discuss how you can transition to OpenSimulator. OpenSimulator is an open source virtual world, similar to Second Life. He will go over the differences between both virtual world platforms, what to expect when transitioning, how you transfer assets, and where to find community and resources.

 

Selby Evans (Thinkerer Melville) is a retired professor of Psychology who taught courses in psychological measurement, computer applications, and systematic problem solving. and conducted research in pattern perception, and studies of cognitive systems, supported by U. S. Military organizations, NASA, National Institutes of Health, and other government organizations.  He also operated a consulting business for 25 years, serving various companies and government agencies.

Professional Networking for You and Your Org for July 15th Nonprofit Commons Meeting

This Friday, July 15th, TechSoup's NonProfit Commons in Second Life will feature Beth O’Connell, M.Ed. (Beth Ghostraven in SL) who will go through tips and practices for professional networking online and within Second Life for both you and your nonprofit, library, or educational organizations and groups. She will go over actionable things you can use to cultivate professional connections to benefit your work and learning possibilities. 

Beth O’Connell (Beth Ghostraven in SL) is in her 19th year of being a school librarian and has worked with Kindergarten through 12th-grade students. She has a Bachelor of Science in Education degree from George Mason University and a Master of Education (School Library Media) degree from James Madison University.

Celebrating the 4th - No NPC Meeting for July 1st

Nonprofit Commons in Second Life will not be hosting a weekly meeting this week, since our usual meeting day of Friday, July 1st, falls at the start of the 4th of July holiday long weekend in the US.

Mental Health Symposium 2016 for June 17th Nonprofit Commons Meeting

This Friday, June 17h, TechSoup's NonProfit Commons in Second Life will iSkye Silverweb presenting on this weekend's Virtual Ability’s Mental Health Symposium 2016 event, taking place on Saturday, June 18, 2016, at The Sojourner Auditorium on the Virtual Ability Island in Second Life. This year's theme is “Down But Not Out” which will feature mental health professionals and individuals who are doing incredible work. You will see a broad range of perspectives and approaches to diagnosing and treating mental illnesses, network with others, and gain insights that may give you a new perspective on mental health and the outlook for treatment and quality of life possibilities.

iSkye Silverweb wears a few hats in the Virtual Ability community: Virtual Ability community events scheduler, Community calendar keeper, Virtual Ability Flickr maven, and a Virtual Ability Mentor. She helps plan the two annual conferences hosted by Virtual Ability: Mental Health Symposium and International Disability Rights Affirmation Conference and is also a member of several mentor groups besides the Virtual Ability Mentors. She enjoys helping new residents get a good start in their Second Life experience. For fun, iSkye does grid hunts, explores art installations, goes shopping, and participates in activities with BURN2and the Lamplighters.

Using Signature Character Strengths in 3D Games & Simulation for June 10th Nonprofit Commons Meeting

This Friday, June 10th, TechSoup's NonProfit Commons in Second Life will feature Dr. Cynthia Calongne (Lyr Lobo) and Dr. Andrew Stricker (Spinoza Quinnell) with a discussion on understanding signature character strengths, and how those can be used in games and simulations.  Following the discussion, there will be a chance to have an in-depth tour of character strength tools.
 
Dr. Cynthia Calongne, is a professor, author, and researcher with 20 years of experience in developing virtual environments and teaching. For 13 years, she worked as a software engineer and a systems programmer for Air Force Space Command and on Capitol Hill. In 2010, Andy Stricker, Mike McCrocklin, and Cynthia Calongne won the first $25,000 Grand Prize in the Federal Virtual World Challenge for the Mars Expedition Strategy Challenge.
 
Dr. Andrew Stricker serves Air University by helping to design, develop, and implement advanced and emerging learning technologies into Air Force educational and professional military education programs. Prior to his arrival to Air University Andrew served Vanderbilt University as Associate Provost for Innovation Through Technology. He was responsible for working with academic, technology and administrative leaders to prioritize, plan and execute the infusion of educational technologies and enabling innovations for improving learning, teaching and research. Andrew also served 27 years as an Air Force officer and scientist specializing in behavioral sciences and human-factors engineering. His graduate work was conducted at Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas and Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut.
