Forum on the Future of the NPC this Friday, June 1

This Friday, June 1, we will talk as a community about the Nonprofit Commons and its future, look at the results of a recent survey many of you filled out, and discuss transitions in the community management of the NPC over the coming months.

Some questions to ponder prior to our meeting:

  • How to do we maximize the utility of Second Life to help nonprofits reach their goals?
  • How do we invite into the NPC the larger constellations of groups that could benefit from our space and our services?
  • And how do we engage with other online and offline communities of nonprofits that are doing great work?

So come with your ideas about how we can continue to grow and evolve this important space and network.

As I announced in a separate communication, I will be stepping down as community manager of the NPC as of next week, and passing on the responsibilities (and joys) of the position to other capable hands. We'll have some time for goodbyes and thanks toward the end of the meeting.

Join us for this important gathering on Friday June 1 starting at 8:30am PT. See you at the Plush Nonprofit Commons amphitheater.

A Heartfelt Thanks and Farewell

A little over a year ago, I gratefully accepted the position of Community Manager of the Nonprofit Commons, a community which I have long viewed as one of the best examples of how virtual worlds can benefit real lives and the real world we live in. As a longtime member, volunteer, organizer and friend of the NPC, being paid to support this unique space was an enormous privilege.

So it is with a heavy heart that I inform you all that this is my last week as Community Manager of the Nonprofit Commons.

As many of you know, I have a number of hats that I wear: virtual producer for Global Kids, founder and editor of the virtual worlds blog Betterverse.org, and digital learning educator at the California Academy of Sciences. My work responsibilities at my other positions are going to be ramping up very quickly in the next months, making my ability to effectively serve as NPC community manager impossible. So rather than short-change this community that I love, I am passing on the reins to others who can carry the mandate forward.

Jeff Elder of Storify at Next Online Community MeetUp on Wednesday May 23!

You don't want to miss the next OC Tribe meetup featuring Storify!

On May 23, the next Online Community Meetup will take place, in San Francisco at the headquarters of TechSoup, and in the virtual world of Second Life at the Nonprofit Commons. The featured guest this month is  Jeff Elder, Marketing Director at Storify, who will talk about, "What To Do When Your Community Wants To Kill You."

Whether you work for a startup, a nonprofit, or a Fortune 500, social media can be a volatile place. Elder has weathered 20,000 negative comments in one day on Facebook and turned that same campaign into a huge success. Here's how to face down the angry crowd, fire a gun into the air and yell, "All right you animals, that's enough!"

To participate, teleport to the Nonprofit Commons on Wednesday May 23, starting at 7pm Pacific Time.  See you then!
