Macmillan Coffee Morning - Cake Against Cancer for the September 25th NonProfit Commons Meeting

This Friday, September 25th, TechSoup's NonProfit Commons in Second Life will feature Saffia Widdershams talking on this years Macmillan Virtual Coffee Morning fundraising event. Every September, the UK charity Macmillan Cancer Support holds the biggest coffee morning in the world – and since  2013, Saffia, and PrimPerfect have held a virtual event in Second Life, creating VR cakes for charity fundraising.

In the UK, the two major cancer charities are Cancer Research UK, which focuses on research, and Macmillan Cancer Support which focuses on support. In the UK, cancer treatment is funded by the NHS, but there are many areas where patients need additional support, such as in accessing vital benefits and information, or simply having someone to talk to. In addition, there are Macmillan nurses who offer specialized care.

Saffia Widdershins is the editor of Prim Perfect Magazine and the executive producer of Designing Worlds, Happy Hunting! and The Blackened Mirror. She has the reputation of having fingers in more pies than she has fingers! She is also one of the team who bring One Billion Rising in Second Life to the grid each year and also supports the annual Macmillan UK Cancer Support's Biggest Coffee Morning in the World.

Will Someone? for the August 28th NonProfit Commons Meeting

This Friday, August 28th, TechSoup's NonProfit Commons in Second Life will feature Chris Heuer, and a presentation on his latest project: Will Someone?

Will Someone is a better way to ask for help to accomplish your objectives. Taking collaboration beyond simple conversation, Will Someone provides a socialized "ask" list, which enables you and your community members to easily see what needs to be done and get more done together. In this way we create accountability and recognition for contributions by facilitating connections between those who have a need and those who have the ability and availability. Now you can easily share all those things on your 'someday we will get to it list' with your community, making that someday come a lot sooner by asking Will Someone? If you are interested in starting a pilot with your advisory board or volunteers by tweeting to @WillSomeone_

About Chris Heuer:

While serving as a leader of Deloitte Consulting's Social Business efforts, he recognized the fundamental need to change the way we collaborate. So in 2013 he set out to build a technology solution that was inherently social, instilled with mutual respect and enabled people to work smarter together. As the founder and Chairman of non-profit Social Media Club, he saw the challenges faced by community organizations firsthand. The resulting solution, Will Someone, is now being offered to select non-profit communities, coworking spaces and advisory boards to enable them to maximize the passion and contributions of their volunteers.

Since he was young, Chris Heuer has had a talent to see how things could be instead of how they are. This vision, plus his mother's belief that he could do anything, lead him to a life of social entrepreneurship, going after some of the biggest opportunities to arise in the past 20 years. He is a consultant, a keynote speaker, a trained facilitator and a well regarded 'futurist'. He serves on several advisory boards, including the American Heart Association Stroke Advisory Board and those of numerous startups through his work as a mentor at Wearable World.
