Behind the Scenes at Virtual Ability's New Resident Orientation for the June 20th NonProfit Commons Meeting

NonThis Friday, June 20th, TechSoup's NonProfit Commons in Second Life will feature a discussion with Alice Krueger (Gentle Heron in SL). Virtual Ability's New Resident Orientation Center was designed to help people with disabilities learn basic Second Life skills. Yet it also works well for newcomers without disabilities. It was built on specific theoretical principles and input from customers that significantly affect the design and operation of the orientation. Gentle will offer explanations of the design background in non-technical language, and then we will tour the instructional facilities on Virtual Ability island.

Before she became a person with a disability, Gentle was a classroom teacher, a researcher, and a professional developer. Now she is head of the SL Virtual Ability cross-disability peer support community and the real life (RL) non-profit Virtual Ability®, Inc. which supports the Second Life community.

After a long battle with his own mental health issues, he saw a need to provide resources and information to others in Second Life, a place where peers could meet and know they are not alone and raise awareness for mental health as there is still much stigma surrounding the subject. Along with others, he has created hunts, parties, and other events that have helped inform people in SL about mental health. Seeing how many people were reached; this year he has decided to expand the work to real life. He is currently working in trying to register Inspirational Mental Health as a real life nonprofit.
